Job description

Our client, a bank, is therefore seeking a Data Catalogue Expert to assess, configure, and optimise the current implementation, while reinforcing semantic consistency and metadata management practices across the organisation.

Job description

The Data Catalogue Expert will support the design, configuration, and continuous improvement of the data catalogue, ensuring alignment with organisational needs, data governance principles, and industry best practices.

The role requires a strong understanding of metadata management, semantic modelling, and data governance, combined with hands-on experience in implementing and configuring data catalogue tools, ideally OpenMetadata.

The expert will work closely with business and IT stakeholders to validate existing implementations, enhance the semantic layer, and ensure that data assets are described, classified, and structured in a meaningful and scalable way.

Responsibilities

·         Assess the current implementation of the data catalogue (OpenMetadata), including configuration, data model, and usage patterns.

·         Validate whether key metadata management concepts (e.g. domains, ownership, lineage, classifications) are correctly implemented and aligned with best practices.

·         Configure and optimise the data catalogue to improve usability, discoverability, and trust in data assets.

·         Design and refine the semantic layer, ensuring consistent business definitions, relationships, and data understanding across domains.

·         Define and implement metadata standards, naming conventions, and governance rules.

·         Support the design and implementation of taxonomies, classifications, and (where relevant) ontologies to structure data assets.

·         Collaborate with data stewards, data owners, and technical teams to ensure proper onboarding and maintenance of metadata.

·         Provide recommendations for improving data catalogue adoption and integration within the broader data ecosystem.

·         Contribute to the alignment between the data catalogue and other components of the data platform (e.g. data quality, lineage, governance workflows).

·         Document configurations, guidelines, and best practices to ensure sustainability and knowledge transfer.

Key deliverables

·         Assessment report of the current data catalogue implementation, including gaps and improvement opportunities.

·         Target operating model and roadmap for optimising the data catalogue.

·         Defined semantic layer framework (business glossary, relationships, and standards).

·         Metadata governance guidelines, including taxonomy and classification models.

·         Implementation of improvements in the OpenMetadata platform.

·         Documentation and knowledge transfer materials for internal teams.

Job requirements

Required skills and competencies

·         Proven experience implementing and configuring data catalogue tools (OpenMetadata experience is a strong asset).

·         Strong understanding of metadata management, data governance, and data lifecycle concepts.

·         Experience designing and managing semantic layers, business glossaries, and data models.

·         Expertise in structuring data through taxonomies; experience with ontologies is a strong advantage.

·         Ability to assess existing implementations and translate findings into practical improvements.

·         Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work across business and technical teams.

·         Experience in data platforms and modern data architectures is preferred.

·         Ability to communicate complex data concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications

·         Master’s degree (e.g. computer science, information systems, data management or related field).

·         Minimum 7-10 years of experience in data management, metadata, or data governance roles.

·         Experience in financial services, public sector, central banking, or regulated environments is preferred.
